IRELAND’S OLDEST MENTAL HEALTHCARE CHARITY RELAUNCHES

Well-known actress, broadcaster and mental health advocate, Mary McEvoy, officially relaunched the Irish mental healthcare charity Recovery Self Help Method Ireland, Tuesday 20th October 2015 in Buswell’s Hotel, Kildare Street, Dublin 2.

Recovery Self Help Method Ireland is one of Ireland’s oldest community mental health organisations 1. For the past 44 years, it has provided cognitive behavioural training for thousands of Irish people suffering from serious mental health problems including anxiety, bipolar disorders and depression.

Through a network of dedicated volunteers, at 22 locations around Ireland, Recovery Self Help Method Ireland provides over 15,000 patient-hours of cognitive behavioural training without charge 2.

Actress Mary McEvoy, who is an advocate for mental health and has been open about her battle with depression, spoke at the event. She said that,” Recovery Self Help Method Ireland has shown me a simple and effective way to deal with my own mental health problems. As a result my life is more calm and peaceful. I would encourage anyone to try this method. It has the power to change your life”.

Also speaking at the launch, Brendan Minnock, CEO of Recovery Self Help Method Ireland said, “The Recovery Self Help Method has helped thousands of Irish people gain control of their lives in spite of having severe mental health problems. If you are suffering poor mental health come to us and try this clinically proven method of self help3 ”.

Doctors, leading politicians, volunteers and patients from around Ireland, attended the event today.

As part of the official launch, Recovery Self Help Method Ireland unveiled their new logo and website www.recoveryireland.ie

Recovery Self Help Method Ireland is an official Irish charity that was established in Dublin in 1971. Our charity registration number is CHY7690.

We are the Irish branch of Recovery International, which was founded in 1937 at the University of Illinois, Psychiatric Institute, by one of its directors called Dr Abraham Low, who was a psychiatrist there.

The organisation is non-sectarian, and non-profit. It is run by members, for members.

Clinical Research has shown, that people who use the Recovery method use fewer tranquillisers, less medication in general, and need less psychological support from others.

We only offer training in our self-help method. We do not offer advice on any medical, clinical or psychological therapy or treatment. Members are advised to follow the instructions of their healthcare provider at all times.

Notes

1) Recovery Self Help Method Ireland was originally established in Ireland in 1971. By contrast Aware was founded later in 1985

2) Patient hours calculated as; 22 meetings x 50 weeks per year x 2 hours x 7 participants at each meeting. There is no charge to patients to attend, however a small voluntary donation of €3 is requested to help pay for tea, coffee and biscuits.
